The new Craig Gaulden Davis-designed Columbia County (GA) Public Library and Jabez Sanford Performing Arts Center opened at the end of March to rave reviews. Columbia County is the largest suburb of Augusta, GA, which in turn is second in size only to Atlanta.

Library Board Chairman Dr. Jefferson Hardin described the 50,000 square foot facility as the “dramatic centerpiece” of the community, calling it the “most ambitious – and successful – quality of life undertaking” in the County’s history. Dr. Hardin also described CGD and their local affiliate, Studio 3 Design Group as world class library architects who delivered a “high-tech and user-friendly masterpiece.”

In addition to 35,000 square feet of library space the structure houses a cafe, a 350-seat theatre with a fully functional stagehouse, and a conference center. It is part of a larger public park that includes a 500-seat amphitheatre, passive recreational area, and playground, each of which was designed by the CGD team

The Florence Little Theatre has asked Craig Gaulden Davis to design its new facility in downtown Florence, SC. The theatre will seat just under 400 before a proscenium stage and will be sited next to the CGD-designed Doctors Bruce & Lee Foundation Library that opened in 2005.

The Florence Little Theatre was founded over 80 years ago in a former military base and has operated from its present location on Cashua Drive since the 1960’s. The move was made possible by $10 million grant from the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation.

CGD is working with Florence architects Goforth Brown & Associates and a team of consultants from South Carolina, North Carolina and Connecticut. Contract Construction of Ballentine, SC will provide construction and preconstruction services. Work is expected to start near the end of 2006 and be ready before the start of the Theatre’s 2008-2009 season.
