Craig, Gaulden Davis has been commissioned by the Charleston County School District to design a new elementary school in the coastal town of Mt. Pleasant, just north of Charleston, SC. The 500-student facility will be constructed on the campus now occupied by the Mt. Pleasant Academy, property that borders the town’s historic Old Village.

The design is expected to recognize views to the marsh and respect adjacent residential properties. Craig Gaulden Davis will collaborate with Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects, Inc., of Mt. Pleasant on the project.

Film May Affect Construction Schedule

Complications due to ice and rain are not unusual in the construction business, but the schedule for a new city center for Greer, SC, may depend on the filming schedule for George Clooney’s new film, Leatherheads. The city is currently talking to production company officials about using the site of their new park and City Hall, designed by Craig Gaulden Davis, as a staging area for the film’s crews.

The Complex includes a new 34,000 square foot City Hall and a new 37,000 square foot Courts and Police Department Building. Outside, there will be new downtown parking and renovations to the Cannon Street Gymnasium. A new 12-acre park will include extensive landscaping, a reflection pond, a gazebo, amphitheatre, picnic shelter, outdoor basketball court, public green space, fountains and public restrooms.

Construction of the buildings is expected to begin in March. Last week, the City of Greer, along with Craig Gaulden Davis and local architects Langley and Associates invited the public to review and comment on the design of the City’s new Municipal Complex.

Fay Sprouse added something new to her already heavy portfolio as superintendent of Ware Shoals School District. Ware Shoals High School, at which Craig Gaulden Davis has completed its second project, was the site Thursday of filming for Leatherheads, a movie about the early days of professional football. The movie stars George Clooney and Renee Zellweger.

Although the weather was wet, the setting was perfect. According to Sprouse, it was an exciting day. “I’ve felt sorry for the extras. The weather has been awful, but it’s what George wanted. They rescheduled just so they would be able to film a game in the rain.”

Ware Shoals High School is located south of Greenville, SC. The campus dates to 1926, when its first building was constructed. Its football stadium was built in 1931. CGD’s cafeteria addition opened in January 2007.
