The Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center was awarded the Max Heller Neighborhood Improvement Award at the Chamber’s 124th Annual Meeting, held February 21, 2013. The award honors an individual or a non-profit organization each year for their achievement in improving a neighborhood or community through physical appearance of the area, human development of the residents or other efforts that improve quality of life. Stephen B. Smith, of CBRE | The Furman Company, presented the award to Major Kent Davis and Matt Good of the Salvation Army.

The mission of the Salvation Army – to restore and strengthen individuals and the community at large – was the inspiration to select the difficult site located near Greenville’s central business district on Academy and Westfield Streets. The Kroc Center’s location created opportunities to serve both the less fortunate and those with means at one location. The site is connected to its surroundings not only by roads, but by public transportation, sidewalks, and trails. The size of the site permitted the Owner to offer part of it to Greenville County Schools for the A. J. Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering (also by CGD).
