John HansenGreenville Technical College announced this week that the renovated Beattie E. Huff Student Center has achieved LEED Silver Certification.  Craig Gaulden Davis designed renovations to the Center, completed in 2010, to improve space used by students to study, dine and collaborate on projects.

The announcement featured a presentation by CGD’s John Hansen on behalf of the US Green Building Council. Hansen is immediate past president of the South Carolina Chapter of the US Green Building Council and currently serves on the regional board of the USGBC. He is an expert in sustainable design and green building initiatives.

Three main design strategies were cited by Hansen:

  • Diverting waste from landfills by renovating, rather than demolishing, the structure, and by using recycled materials.
  • Saving energy and water by installing energy efficient systems, insulated low-E glass, and low-usage plumbing fixtures.
  • Creating a better environment for students by maximizing views, improving mechanical systems, reducing ambient noise levels and minimizing finishes whose emissions can affect students with allergies.
