Mount Pleasant Academy

Located on the marsh near the historic fishing village, the existing Mt. Pleasant Academy was in an ideal location, within walking distance of many of its students, and offered a view of the Sullivan’s Island lighthouse.

Craig Gaulden Davis was commissioned to provide a sensitive and contextual design for a new, larger facility on the same site, while meeting all current functional requirements and guidelines.

CGD’s solution addresses the challenges and provides a fresh interior design scheme that whimsically reflects the nearby fishing community. The reception desks utilize lap-board siding, and the fabric sails and light fixtures above resemble birds and port holes.

The school is sited on a narrow, 200-foot-wide piece of property and DOT guidelines were met by having the students dropped off near the rear of the building while keeping the few buses at the front of the school.
