Township Auditorium

Township Auditorium

Since its 1930 opening, the Township has been part of the social fabric of Columbia, SC. It has hosted thousands of events, from concerts, wrestling and boxing matches, comedy performances and political rallies, to graduations, reunions and conventions. The building is situated amid historic properties between downtown Columbia and the city’s historically black college campuses. CGD evaluated the existing building and recommended changes and additions to streamline backstage activities and improve the audience experience.

  • The main façade was reconstructed in front of an expanded lobby
  • The lobby expansion was inspired by an unbuilt alternate considered in 1929
  • A transparent new corner structure offers a dramatic new feature to passersby
  • Loading dock and back-of-house areas were added
