University Center Additions & Renovations

The renovation of Furman University’s Student Center brought new life to a dark and uninviting 1950’s building and became a recruiting tool for this renowned liberal arts
university. A significant portion of the adjacent lake had to be closed in order to provide space to double the size of the building, and operations were not interrupted during the renovation. The additions honored the original design while creating an open “link” which serves as the primary entrance and organizing component.

• Large, dividable assembly room with 180 degree views of the lake
• Expansive bookstore with café overlooking the lake
• New food court and multi-purpose dining / entertainment facility
• New student government offices, meeting spaces and entertainment theater
• Enhanced student services offices
• Multiple outdoor spaces for student use

Area: 75,000 SF
Completion: 1999
Cost: $9.4 Million
