Originally designed by Craig Gaulden Davis in the early 70’s, Anderson School District One engaged the firm to create more gathering space outside the gymnasium for the students, provide additional administrative space and design a more inviting entrance and commons area. CGD removed the roof from the existing entrance walkway and added sloped translucent panels to give the building a more contemporary aesthetic. A plaza with concrete seating featuring a sculptural palmetto tree provides space for students to congregate after school.

The commons area continued to serve its original function, but was very dated. Trophy cases to display sports recognitions were added on the gym wall. Similar cases in the school colors were added on the auditorium wall to display awards for the arts. To reinforce the school’s mascot as “The Hurricanes,” curved panels were added in the ceiling to encourage movement and make the space vibrant.
