Brookgreen Gardens, the first and one of the finest figurative sculpture gardens in America, was established in 1931 on the grounds of a 200-year old rice plantation. The entire collection of over 500 works is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. CGD was asked to design a new complex of buildings to counter the vulnerability to the weather and expand the garden’s offering to visitors. The complex includes an education center, museum shop and connector. Drawing from the original architecture, brick arches are used throughout, incorporating custom designed lighting, ironwork and outdoor furnishings. The facility provides a new and more formal entrance to the original gardens.
