Buist Academy is a K-8 International Baccalaureate (IB) school located on Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston. The school was condemned because it did not meet current seismic codes, yet the original 1921 structure was preserved while the remainder of the building was demolished. The replacement facility includes all the amenities of a current elementary and middle school, including a full-size gymnasium with spectator seating. The interior was designed to preserve the character of the original structure and reflect old Charleston alleyways featuring bluestone pavers, various colors and steel fire escapes.
