Upstate schools recognized for educational design

October 12, 2021

Local architecture firm, Craig Gaulden Davis, has been recognized by South Carolina’s Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) with three of the nine design awards given for South Carolina’s Best in Class school solutions.

The award process includes an out-of-state jury panel who blind judge the submissions. This year’s panel of judges included Marc Clinch, Chief Facilities Officer of The School District of Osceola, Florida. Joe Echeverri, Principal at Bassetti Architects, who heads up their Portland, Oregon office. Steven Grube who serves as the Director of Planning and Construction Services for the Volusia County School District in Daytona Beach, Florida. And Annemarie Jacques, formerly a professor of architecture at Clemson University and now an Adjunct Assistant Professor of the School of Architecture at Portland State University.

Roper Mountain Science Center’s new Environmental Science Building was recognized with an Honor Award for its emphasis on community partners, sustainable features, playful, popping color palette, and attention to how the building is nestled in the site with a bridging element to the entrance.

“This appears to be a longstanding great client with a lot of vision and support. The addition has a lot of nice energy. The interiors have a tight connection with the exhibits.  The exhibits are very integral to excitement of spaces.”

– Annemarie Jacques (jury member)

Greenville’s Legacy Early College was presented with a Merit Award for the historic renovation and addition to the Hollis Building on the Parker Campus. Jury members commented on the respectful nature of the new entry and maintaining the vibe of the textile era, the thoughtful assembly of mixed materials, the open, flexibility and variety of seating that will familiarize students with the college mindset.

“This was one of my favorite interior projects. It seems very clean and sophisticated due to the how organized the ductwork and materials were and how they defined the circulation.” – Joe Echeverri (jury member)

Finally, the Conference Center for Anderson District I & II Career and Technology Center won a Citation for Sustainability. This 5,000 sf conference building serves two school districts and was recognized for its attention to sustainability, notably, the industrial vernacular with photovoltaic panels on the back side of light monitors that let in North light, no windows on the west to absorb the high-intensity sun, energy efficient fixtures, and regional materials.

For a little building, sustainability was addressed on every elevation in response to solar orientation.”  – Marc Clinch (jury member)
