The Laurens County Courthouse, a landmark Greek Revival structure constructed between 1837 and 1840, occupies the center block of Laurens’ historic Public Square. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 16,000-square-foot courthouse underwent a comprehensive restoration and adaptive reuse effort that preserved its historic character while transforming it into a vibrant civic and community destination.
Guided by a phased restoration approach, the project returned the building to an appearance reflective of its 1911 era while integrating modern infrastructure to support contemporary use. Restoration efforts included rehabilitation of the courthouse’s iconic copper dome and rainwater management systems, removal of non-historic additions, restoration of the historic stucco facade and pediments, installation of historically appropriate windows and doors, replacement of the copper roof, gutters, and downspouts, and restoration of the monumental entry stairs. New historically compatible metal railings and site lighting were also incorporated to enhance accessibility, safety, and the visitor experience while maintaining the building’s architectural integrity.
The restored courthouse now serves as a flexible civic and community venue, providing meeting space for County Council, economic development initiatives, local businesses, and community organizations. The facility also accommodates educational programs, conferences, and special events. A visitor center and interpretive exhibit area highlight the courthouse’s history while showcasing significant historic structural features revealed through the restoration.
